How do I get assessed for ADHD in the UK?

In the UK, there are various options available for undergoing an assessment for ADHD, including NHS services and private clinics.

The process of being assessed for ADHD through the NHS typically involves the following steps:

  • Consulting Your GP: The initial step in the assessment process is to consult your GP. They will provide information on the available options and may refer you to a psychiatrist or, in some cases, a paediatrician if deemed necessary.
  • Specialist Consultation: A specialist will conduct a thorough assessment and, if appropriate, provide a diagnosis.
  • Diagnostic Assessment: A diagnostic assessment for ADHD typically includes an evaluation of symptoms, a review of your medical and psychiatric history, and a physical examination. Additionally, you may be required to complete questionnaires or cognitive tests.
  • Diagnosis: If the specialist determines that you have ADHD, they will provide a formal diagnosis and discuss treatment options.
  • Treatment: Treatment for ADHD often involves medications. Stimulants and non-stimulants can help reduce symptoms. If medications are not suitable or effective, individuals can choose therapy options. Cognitive-Behavioural therapy (CBT), for instance, can help in learning strategies to manage symptoms.

Alternatively, private clinics such as us, also offer ADHD assessments, and we accept self-referrals. However, it is essential to note that private assessments can be expensive.

It is crucial to recognise that the ADHD assessment process can be time-consuming and is not always straightforward. It is not guaranteed that everyone displaying ADHD-like symptoms receives a formal diagnosis, even if they experience challenges with attention and hyperactivity.

If you do not  meet the criteria for an ADHD diagnosis, the specialist psychiatrist may suggest alternative forms of assistance, such as counselling or coaching.
